New record for new infections with the corona virus

According to the WHO, 189,000 new cases were registered worldwide within 24 hours. Brazil and the USA once again stand out among the countries with a particularly high number of new infections.

Since the start of the corona pandemic, more than 500,000 people worldwide have died from infection with the virus, according to US scientists at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. As a reference, the global population is around 7.75 billion people. The World Health Organization (WHO) also released new data. Accordingly, the daily new reported corona infections have reached a new record. 189,000 new cases were registered worldwide within 24 hours.

Brazil and the USA once again stand out among the countries with a particularly high number of new infections. According to the WHO, 46,860 new cases were recorded in Brazil. In the United States, there were 44,458. India had the third highest increase in the most recent table worldwide with 19,906 cases. According to the WHO table, Austria scores significantly more positive with 64 registered new infections within one day. For Germany the value is 256, for Italy 175, for Spain 569. In Great Britain at least 890 people contracted the corona virus within 24 hours.

USA have the highest number of victims

The number of victims in the United States, a country with around 330 million inhabitants, is the highest in absolute numbers worldwide. However, relative to the number of inhabitants, the number of deaths is higher in some European countries. In the US, around 38 people per 100,000 people died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the UK, this figure is rounded at 66, in Italy at 57 and in Sweden at 52, in Germany at 11 and in Austria just over eight.

In the US, the number of new infections has reached a new high since Friday due to the rapid spread of the virus in the southern states. Around 88,000 new infections were reported at the weekend.

Different numbers from WHO

The Hopkins University website is updated regularly with incoming data and therefore shows a higher level than the official figures of the World Health Organization (WHO). In some cases, however, the numbers have recently been revised downwards. Experts assume that the number of unreported cases is higher.

According to the WHO, there were 9.84 million known infections and 496,000 deaths by Sunday. The corona virus pandemic started around the turn of the year in China. The novel coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 can trigger the lung disease Covid-19, which can be fatal especially in older or immunocompromised patients.
