The Stuntman Movie Review: Action-packed Tribute to Stunt Performers

Stuntman Colt Seavers (Gosling) is a star in his field, the personal stuntman of a famous actor. After an unfortunate fall from a height, he is shut down for a long time, first in the hospital, where they fix his body, but he loses the will to continue his dangerous work.

And what’s worse, continue the love affair with cameraman Jody. He is withdrawing from the world of film and has no intention of returning.

When ambitious producer Gail Meyr asks him to offer double action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in an upcoming sci-fi film, he doesn’t want to hear about it. . But when he tells him that the director, industry debutant Jody, has asked him, he immediately gets on the first plane to Australia.

What then unfolds on set follows both Colt and Jody’s developing relationship, and a crime plot that would be rather silly and over-the-top if it weren’t quite entertaining with obvious exaggeration. .

It does not overdo humor, numerous references to action and sci-fi films, and especially fantastic stunts.

Director Leitch was originally a stuntman himself. “My career has been built on 20 years of being hit, riding wires, crashing cars, catching fire and working closely with every department in the industry,” said Leitch, who has worked his way up to choreographing action scenes and working his way up to directing co-director Chad Stahelski on John Wick.

So it would be difficult to find a filmmaker who could give a bigger and more impressive tribute to the craft of people who often put their lives on the line, but still have names behind them. Anyway, Ryan Gosling’s stuntman in the most challenging scenes was a master of Logan Holladay’s trade, who even managed to break the record for the number of car flips in the air. The latter held the movie Casino Royal with seven spins, the Stuntman offers eight and a half. It is already clear from this that the audience will enjoy the dangerous scenes to their heart’s content.

Funny dialogues bring humor, but also the use of sci-fi monster masks not only in front of the camera, but especially behind it. The film flies at an excellent speed, Jonathan Selo’s camera captures every stunt in a way that the viewer can fully enjoy.

But its greatest strength is the excellent performances of Ryan Gosling (La la Land, Barbie) and Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns, Oppenheimer). Both play with great enthusiasm, precise emotional defense and the chemistry between them is perfect. Every encounter they have, whether it’s full of flirting, arguments, or love, is literally captivating.

Hannah Waddingham also gives excellent performances as the ambitious, unscrupulous producer Gail Meyer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the spoiled movie star.
