NCTV: Attack less likely in the Netherlands due to corona crisis NOW

A large-scale attack in the Netherlands is currently less likely due to the corona crisis, according to the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) Thursday. Nevertheless, the threat level remains at level 3 out of 5.

The biggest terrorist threat still comes from a jihadist angle, according to the threat assessment. At the same time, the freedom of movement of jihadists is also hindered by the corona measures. This makes it more difficult to hit a large group of people by an attack, according to the NCTV.

However, according to the national coordinator, jihadists see the corona virus as a “divine intervention”. Both the Islamic State and Al Qaeda point this out to the West.

An attack from the right-extremist corner is also conceivable. According to the NCTV, the attack on a mosque in Christchurch (New Zealand) has inspired several perpetrators worldwide. “In the Netherlands, too, a right-wing terrorist attack by a loner is conceivable.” Dutch extreme right-wing groups are barely active, the report states.

NCTV also has opponents 5G in its sights

Finally, the NCTV also identifies other extremist and polarizing trends in the Netherlands. The threat report highlights, among other things, the recent arson in radio masts and the opponents of 5G.

The climate debate is causing controversy among far-left groups, but “actions are mainly limited to the word rather than the act,” according to the NCTV.
