NASA Plane Captures Sun ‘Touch’ Video

Jakarta

A few days ago the spaceship Parker Solar Probe owned by NASA managed to ‘touch’ Sun for the first time. The record-breaking aircraft also sent a video showing the historic moment.

The video was taken as Parker flew through the sun’s upper atmosphere known as the corona. This video is actually a series of images put together by scientists to make one video.

In this video you can see how Parker meet streamers on their way. Streamers are band-like structures that are part of the corona and were previously only visible during a solar eclipse.

“This structure can be seen as a bright feature moving up in the top photo and sloping down in the bottom row,” NASA said in its official statement, as quoted from Interesting Engineering, Sunday (12/19/2021).

“Such a sight was only possible because of the bright spacecraft above and below the streamers within the corona. Until recently, streamers could only be seen from afar. They are visible from Earth during a total solar eclipse.”

But that’s not all that can be seen from this short video. If you look closely, you can also see the Milky Way Galaxy and several other planets appearing in the background of the video.

NASA has not revealed which planets are seen in the video, but some scientists have given predictions. Astrophysicist Grant Tremblay, with help from computational scientists Karl Battams and Andrew Phillips, reveals Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are guest stars in this video.

When taking these photos, Parker was flying at a speed of 147 km per second. These photos were taken over five days from August 8 to August 12, 2021.

Parker Solar Probe itself has several times broken records after being launched three years ago. This spacecraft is the fastest man-made object of all time, and the closest man-made object to the sun with a distance of 8.5 million km from its surface.

The Parker Solar Probe will continue to approach the sun and dive deeper into its atmosphere to collect various data. This aircraft still has until 2025 to complete its mission.
