The school authorities of Uvalde, Texas, canceled this Friday a meeting to decide the future of the district police chief, Pete Arredondo, who faces the prospect of becoming the first officer to be fired over law enforcement’s slow response to the massacre of the Robb Elementary School.

Arredondo’s job was to be discussed at a school board meeting scheduled for Saturday. But in a statement Friday, the district said it had canceled the meeting at the request of Arredondo’s attorney and due to “due process requirements.”
The district indicated that the possible dismissal of the police chief would be considered later, but did not specify when.
The change comes just two days after Uvalde’s supervisor recommended Arredondo’s firing amid growing public pressure and impatience in South Texas for accountability, after police body camera footage and A new report will reveal how officers waited in the school hallway for more than 70 minutes instead of confronting the assailant inside a fourth-grade classroom.
