Although the majority of the protesters behaved peacefully, skirmishes quickly arose between a group of demonstrators dressed in black and law enforcement officers. Also, these demonstrators began to smash shop windows.
As a result, financial institutions and real estate agencies, insurance companies, an organic store and a McDonald’s restaurant were damaged or looted.
Police have arrested 29 people, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said.
Activists attacked firefighters who were extinguishing the fire, the police responded with tear gas.
Far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who came third in the first round of the presidential election, took part in a march in Paris. He wants to rally an alliance of the left, including the Greens, to win a majority in parliament.
