The Italian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who was behind bars, died at the age of 61, the world agencies reported.

Messina Denaro was suffering from terminal colon cancer and was transferred from prison to a hospital in the town of Aquila, where he died. There, his cancer treatment was gradually discontinued and he underwent only palliative care. A few days ago he fell into a coma.

Matteo Messina Denaro, who was the boss of Cosa Nostra, was arrested in January after 30 years on the run from authorities. He was caught by a specialist police unit at a cancer treatment clinic in Palermo, where he was being treated under a false name.

Messina Denaro has been sentenced in absentia to life in prison for his role in a series of gruesome murders and car bombings in Italy.

Among other crimes, he is accused of the 1992 bombings that killed leading anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

Denaro is believed to be a close confidant of former Mafia crime bosses Bernardo Provenzano and Salvatore Riina.
