Giuseppe Refrigeri was arrested on the Costa del Sol, Spain. Under an international arrest warrant, he must now be extradited to Italy, reports Corriere Della Serra.
Giuseppe Refrigeri, a spawner of the Banda della Marranella, accused of ruling drug trafficking in Rome, was arrested in Spain, while he was presumably trying to find a job. The 66-year-old had been wanted for several years. From Spain, he allegedly attempted to smuggle 325 kilos of hashish to Italy in 2018. Following the interception of the package on French territory, he was under an international arrest warrant. An international channel for the trade of drugs, cocaine, hashish and marijuana, had also been identified, reports the Corriere Della Serra.
Despite the threat, the fugitive reportedly continued his business from the Costa del Sol, using false identity papers. During an operation dubbed Maverick II, The Independent reports that the Spanish authorities have seized no less than 500 kilos of hashish, six luxury cars and a vehicle intended for transporting drugs between Spain and Italy. The Banda della Marranella did not hesitate to resort to violence or torture to weaken its competitors.
A tidy life
Has Giuseppe Refrigeri finally got tired of illegality? According to the Civil Guard, relayed by The Independent, the fugitive, who had exchanged his luxurious villa for a modest apartment, was at the time of his arrest registered as a foreign national with the authorities, and regularly went to the INEM, the equivalent of the French employment center, in Estepona.
The collaboration between the Spanish authorities and the Italian riflemen, however, got the better of his goodwill: Giuseppe Refrigeri, whose arrest was made public last week, must now be extradited to Italy.
