A boss of the Sicilian mafia Cosa Nostra bitten off the little finger of a jailer this summer and swallowed it, the newspaper Il Messaggero reported.

Giuseppe Fanara (60) has been serving a sentence in Rebibbia prison in Rome for nine years under the harsh regime that applies to mafiosi in Italy. According to Il Messaggero, in June he attacked seven prison guards who wanted to check his cell. In a hand-to-hand fight on the floor of his cell, he punched a jailer in the face and then bit the little finger off his right hand. The finger was not found, from which an attorney in Rome deduced that the Mafioso had swallowed it, the newspaper adds.
After the prisoner had worked the remaining guards with a broomstick, he was transferred to the high-security prison of Sassari in Sardinia.
Giuseppe Fanara was sentenced to life in 2009 in a trial for the murder of two brothers who opposed Cosa Nostra’s demands and for the murder of three men following conflicts between two mafia clans.
