International Community Urged to Address Current Situations in Myanmar, North Korea, Palestine, and Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Jakarta

Prime Minister (PM) Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim calls on the international community not to remain silent on the current situation in Myanmar, North Korea (Jewelry), Palestine and the ongoing conflict between Russia-Ukraine.

As reported The StarThursday (7/9/2023), Anwar made this call while speaking at the 11th East Asia Summit forum which was held simultaneously with The 43rd ASEAN Summit and several other summits in Jakarta this week.

Anwar stated that Malaysia is concerned about the situation in North Korea, which has been aggressively launching ballistic missiles and its nuclear program clearly violates United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions. He also stressed that ASEAN could not ignore the concerns over the situation in Myanmar.

“And I think we in this forum cannot choose to ignore the concerns of neighboring countries in this region. We have to handle more than 200,000 refugees (from Myanmar),” he said.

“We also reject the setbacks in Ukraine and call for meaningful dialogue to reach a peaceful resolution,” said Anwar.

“However I would like to emphasize here the concerns that many of us have, which are not publicly expressed, about disproportionate treatment in light of the recent conflict in Ukraine, and the 75 year conflict in the occupied Palestinian territories,” he stressed.

United States (US) Vice President Kamala Harris, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as well as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the East Asia Summit, which offered an opportunity for high-level, direct diplomacy between countries that compete.

The international community, stressed Anwar, cannot ignore Israel’s continued attacks on the basic rights, life and dignity of Palestinians of all religions on their own land.
