Lockdown next week? | Currently Germany | DW

According to the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann, the significant expansion of the Corona requirements is imminent before Christmas. The Green politician spoke at a digital state conference of his party. Previously, he had participated in a corona message with Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Prime Minister of the Union in preparation for the federal-state meeting on Sunday.

Corona infections are increasing sharply

Everyone should expect that the hard lockdown “begins next week, when we will largely shut down social life,” announced the Prime Minister. The sharp rise in the number of infections left the country chiefs no choice, said Kretschmann, who leads a green-black government and therefore takes part in certain rounds of the Union’s prime ministers.

The health authorities in Germany had last reported 28,438 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute within one day. That comes from the numbers from Saturday morning. The peak was reached on Friday with 29,875 reported cases. Last Saturday the number was 23,318.

The number of deaths was given as 496. The previous high of 598 deaths was reached on Friday. The number of daily deaths had tended to go up recently, which was expected after the steep increase in new infections. The total number of people who died in Germany with or with the involvement of an infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 21,466.

The retail sector will probably be hit again with closings

In view of the high numbers, calls for a quick lockdown had already become significantly louder in the past few days. Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) called for quick restrictions on retailers on Saturday. At the same time, he promised that the government would keep an eye on the associated economic and social consequences.

Wednesday as the start date in conversation

Some countries have already imposed extensive restrictions. In Saxony, for example, a lockdown is to begin on Monday. An exit restriction already applies in Baden-Württemberg. In addition to the beginning, it is also still unclear which measures the tightened lockdown will include. According to the “Bild” newspaper, the Chancellery is calling for shops, schools and daycare centers to be closed from next Wednesday. Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer also spoke out in favor of a joint decision against the opening of the German ski areas. “Anything else would be inconsistent in view of the numbers,” he told the “Spiegel”.

The chairman of the opposition FDP, Christian Lindner, meanwhile insists on maintaining proportionality in the planned new measures. “There will now be a Corona emergency brake, because a sustainable strategy is still missing,” he told the German Press Agency in Berlin. “But there must not be disproportionately sharp interference with fundamental rights.” The liberal politician particularly rejects blanket exit restrictions. He noted that there was no risk of infection from taking members of the household for a walk or exercising in the open air.
