Kim Jong-Un’s Unusual New Year’s Speech

Jakarta

There is something unusual about the Leader of North Korea (Korut), Kim Jong Un. In this speech for the turn of the year 2021 to 2022, he removed the nuclear issue.

Not only the nuclear issue, this time his speech did not mention anything about the United States (US). For information, Jong-Un delivered a speech ahead of the new year to mark 10 years in power.

Reported by Reuters on Saturday (1/1/2021), Jong-Un said North Korea’s main goal in this new year is economic development and improving people’s living standards. The contents of Jong-Un’s speech were reported by North Korea’s national media.

The speech was delivered by Jong-Un ahead of the turn of the year on Friday (31/12) local time. He made a speech at the end of the plenary meeting of the Central Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea which has been held since Monday (27/12) local time.

It was known in a speech ahead of the previous New Year, Jong-Un always announced major policies including the launch of diplomatic engagement with South Korea (South Korea) and the US. However, a summary of his speech released by North Korea’s national media made no mention of the US, referring only to discussions on inter-Korean relations and “external affairs”.

The focus on domestic affairs in Jong-Un’s latest speech underscores the economic crisis facing North Korea, where border closures during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have left North Korea more isolated than ever before.

“The basic tasks facing the next year are to provide firm guarantees to implement the five-year plan and make extraordinary changes in national development and people’s lives,” Jong-Un said in his speech.

Kim Jong Un spent most of his speech discussing domestic issues, from ambitious plans for rural development to people’s diets, school uniforms and the need to crack down on ‘non-socialist practices’.
