There are two more exits from the office of non-registered deputy Joacine Katar Moreira: Silvania de Barros and Inês Beleza Barreiros were anddismissed from office on 23 February, according to a dispatch published this Wednesday in Diário da República. The two exits take place after Joacine Katar Moreira’s chief of staff has also left office in December of the last year, without having explained the reason for leaving.
According to the records available in Diário da República, Silvania de Barros leaves office less than three months after being appointed to the deputy’s office, on December 11, 2020 (days before Rafael Esteves Martins’ departure was made public).
In total, there are already four exits from the deputy’s communication office. They all happened after Joacine Katar Moreira, elected by Livre in October 2019, having lost the party’s political confidence on 31 January 2020. In addition to Rafael Esteves Martins, Silvania de Barros and Inês Beleza Barreiros, adviser Ana Lobato also left the office, in October 2020. Rafael Esteves Martins, until then chief of staff, had been chosen by the deputy in October 2019 and remained at the side of Joacine Katar Moreira after the Free party had withdrawn his political confidence. But the communication office will not be empty: the new advisor to Joacine Katar Moreira, Miriam Sabjaly, he was appointed to the post on February 19 and has already taken office in Parliament.
The dispute between the deputy and the governing bodies of the Livre was known at the beginning of the legislature, when Joacine Katar Moreira abstained and in a vote of condemnation for “another Israeli aggression in Gaza” presented by the PCP. Since then, the relationship with the party leadership has remained tense and culminated in the split between the two parties and Livre became the first party to lose parliamentary representation under these conditions.
