Jeff Bezos Takes This 82-Year-Old Female Pilot on a Space Tour

Wally Funk is an airplane pilot who has trained for NASA’s Mercury program. However, Wally never got the chance to be sent to outer space.

On Thursday (1/6/2021) yesterday, the company Blue Origin announced that Wally Funk would be the fourth person chosen to fly on the New Shepard rocket.

Not only that, Jeff Bezos even named Wally Funk as the guest of honor as well as revealing the reason for inviting the 82-year-old pilot.

“There’s no need to wait anymore,” Jeff Bezos wrote, sharing a video of his visit to Wally Funk.

“In 1961, Wally Funk was the best student in his class as part of the Mercury 13 Woman in Space Program. Despite completing training, the program was canceled and none of the 13 people flew.”

The Mercury 13 program itself was held in February 1961 ago. At that time, there were 13 women who had attended the training to the test.

In addition to being the best student, Wally Funk also succeeded in becoming the youngest woman to graduate from the program. However, she was never flown by NASA because of her status as a woman.

“I called NASA 4 times and said, I want to be an astronaut, but no one will accept me,” said Wally about his past.

“I didn’t think I wouldn’t be able to fly up. Nothing could stop me,” Wally added when he was refused to fly because he was a woman.

In addition to training with NASA, Wally Funk also has experience in flying airplanes. Wally has earned 19,600 flight hours and taught more than 3,000 people to fly private and commercial aircraft.

However, when flying with New Shepard’s rocket later, Wally Funk doesn’t have to do much. The reason is that the rocket has been designed to run automatically.

With the New Shepard rocket, anyone can become an astronaut after a few hours of security training at the Blue Origin facility.

On the other hand, Wally Funk himself had previously purchased tickets for a rocket made by the Virgin Galactic company. However, the rocket is still in the experimental period and the flight date is uncertain.
