Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Seizes Ships Suspected of Oil Smuggling in Persian Gulf

As reported by the Iranian media and, in particular, the agency “Tasnim”the navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps seized two ships in the Persian Gulf suspected of involvement in oil smuggling.

The commander of the fifth squadron of the IRGC Navy, Admiral Ali Azmaei, said that during the operation, the crews of both ships – 34 people – were detained. It was established that the ships’ cargo amounted to 4.5 million liters of oil.

No additional details about the incident were provided. It is unclear what flags the ships flew under, and citizens of which countries are on the crew.

Fuel prices in Iran are among the lowest in the world due to the fact that many markets are closed to them due to sanctions, and the local currency is rapidly depreciating. This attracts smugglers.
