Iran has released a lecturer from the University of Melbourne accused of espionage – Abroad – News

Moore-Gilbert was sentenced in Iran to ten years in prison for espionage.

Iran announced her detention in September 2019, but it is believed that she had been detained a year before and had been in prison for two years and three months.

Moore-Gilbert categorically denied guilt in accusations of espionage.

Iran announced on Wednesday that it had released Moore-Gilbert in exchange for prisoners. The media reports that three Iranians have been exchanged for Moore-Gilbert, but their identities are unknown.

Moore-Gilbert thanked the Australian Government for the progress she had made in releasing her, saying that despite what had happened, she felt only respect, love and admiration for Iran and its people.

“I came to Iran as a friend and with friendly intentions and divorced from Iran, these feelings are not only intact, but stronger,” Moore-Gilbert said.
