In the new art house “Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICA SF)”, artists from the Bay Area and international artists will present their works with immediate effect.
American painter, sculptor and multimedia artist Jeffrey Gibson, who is descended from the Indian tribes of the Choctaw and Cherokee, makes the beginning. Its major exhibition “This Burning World” will show impressive installations, screenings and videos until March 26, 2023. It is a “site-specific project about our broken relationship with the earth,” explains the ICA SF. Admission to the Kunsthalle is free.
Two more exhibitions from January
The next exhibition at ICA SF, which officially opens on January 21, 2023 and runs until May 14, is titled “A Weed by Any Other Name”. It features several paintings and a mural by Oakland artists Elizabeth Hernández and Ryan Whelan.
During the same period, the “Resting Our Eyes” exhibition can also be visited. In their exhibition, guest curators and activists Tahirah Rasheed and Autumn Breon present works by 20 multigenerational black artists. Visitors can admire sculptures, photographs, paintings and textiles.
Continuos changing
As a new institution for contemporary art, the ICA SF aims to promote important values in the art world: to put individuals above institutions. The ICA SF should therefore be a place that is continually “under construction”. In changing exhibitions, programs and performances, artists have the opportunity to “cross borders and experiment with new ideas,” according to a statement from the nonprofit organization.

Located at 901 Minnesota Street in the up-and-coming Dogpatch neighborhood, the ICA SF is housed in a 1,000-square-foot brick building from the 1940s. The ICA SF is open every Wednesday from 12:00 to 17:00, Thursday and Friday also from 12:00 to 19:00 and on weekends from 11:00 to 17:00. Admission is free.
