In addition to helping control blood sugar, this is another effect of insulin for diabetic patients

Many believe that people with diabetes cannot donate blood. There is a myth that by donating blood, blood sugar levels will rise. However, this is actually not true.

Internal medicine specialist Dr Rudi K, SpPD, DipTH, MM, MARS said people with diabetes can donate blood as long as they are not using insulin.

“If you can do without insulin,” he said inside multimedia laboratory entitled “Limit sugar consumption to prevent diabetes” on Thursday (11/17/2022).

“So, diabetics who don’t use insulin and are in good health, fromwhich means it’s not very high in sugar anymore.”

Diabetes is a metabolic disease. It affects the patient’s body, not the blood. As long as the patient doesn’t have chronic complications of diabetes like heart disease or kidney problems, there’s no reason they can’t give blood, said Dr. Manoj Chadha a NDTV.

When it comes to donating blood, people with diabetes must follow the same requirements as people who don’t have diabetes, including meeting a minimum hemoglobin level, healthy blood sugar and blood pressure readings, and not having had past infections.

“Diabetes doesn’t cause an infection like other diseases. If a patient is eligible to donate blood, then do so. Donating blood can help save someone’s life,” said Dr. Chada.
