Type 2 diabetes affects many people around the world, so finding healthy ways to help lower blood sugar is important when it comes to coping with the condition and according to experts, adding turmeric spice to your food can help lower your sugar levels. In blood, as reported by the British newspaper “express”.

The active ingredient of turmeric, curcumin, is attributed to the spice’s many purported benefits.

Several studies indicate that curcumin can lower the level of glucose in the blood, in addition to other complications associated with diabetes.

The researchers also found that curcumin may have a role in preventing diabetes.

Curcumin extract can be found in over-the-counter supplements, and it may also provide general health benefits, such as aiding with digestion.

According to Medical News Today, curcumin may help diabetics manage their blood sugar levels.

The health site continued: “Studies conducted on animals have indicated that curcumin can have a positive effect on high blood sugar and improving insulin sensitivity.”

Scientists believe that turmeric may have properties that help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, factors that appear to play a role in diabetes. For this reason, they believe that turmeric may be beneficial for people with diabetes.

In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, curcumin was analyzed as a natural product for diabetes and its complications.

The study indicated that “curcumin is the bioactive, yellow colored component of the perennial plant, Curcuma longa, which possesses a wide range of physiological and pharmacological properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, neuroprotective and anti-diabetic properties.”

The study added that curcumin’s anti-diabetic activity may be due to its strong ability to suppress oxidative stress and inflammation.

Curcumin has a protective role against advanced glucose in addition to cross-linking of collagen, and through this method, it reduces diabetes complications resulting from the end products of glycation.

Also, the study revealed, that curcumin reduces blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels in diabetic mice by regulating the urea pathway.

The study concluded that the scientific literature shows that curcumin has anti-diabetic effects and relieves diabetes complications.

In another study investigating the use of an anti-inflammatory supplement in patients with chronic kidney disease, it indicated that chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by a persistent decrease in kidney function, increased inflammation, and decreased antioxidant capacity.

And the study continued: “Sixteen patients with CKD were randomly selected to receive a herbal supplement consisting of Curcuma longa and Boswellia serrata, or a placebo, and it shows that mild and moderate chronic kidney disease is associated with chronic inflammation and low antioxidant activity.”

The study concluded that: “Curcumin is safe and helps improve inflammatory cytokine levels.”

Health experts recommend mixing a pinch of cinnamon powder in turmeric milk and drinking it in the morning. This combination of powerful spices can lower insulin and triglycerides caused by high-fat meals and can lower blood sugar levels considerably.

Other foods that are said to help lower blood sugar levels and reduce risks include seafood, broccoli, lentils, kale, berries, avocados, and protein.

For people with diabetes or other conditions that affect blood sugar, diet is a key part of maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.
