A 51-year-old Belgian was killed on Thursday evening in Austria’s Tyrol province after his kayak overturned, local radio reported. The victim, who found his head under water and was thrown from his boat, was found by the emergency services several kilometers from the scene of the accident. The 50-year-old succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The accident occurred on a tributary of the Inn river in the territory of the municipality of Sölden. The man had gone sailing with two friends who tried to save him but he was swept away by the current.
The Belgian was located a few kilometers downstream after research carried out with the support of a police helicopter. The firefighters immediately took him out of the water to resuscitate him. Hospitalized in serious condition, the man died shortly after being admitted to hospital.
The day before, a 71-year-old Belgian hiker had a fatal fall in the Austrian Alps. The drama unfolded as the victim attempted to retrieve his dropped camera.
In order to recover his property, the septuagenarian left the path and ventured into dangerous terrain before disappearing in front of his wife. The man likely slipped and fell, police said.
A group of hikers passed by the same spot about an hour later and called for help. A helicopter located the body of the Belgian 150 meters below.
