Here, women are no longer allowed to wear “burkini” – Dagsavisen

Until Tuesday, women in Grenoble could cover themselves as they wished in public swimming pools. This is now the end of in the French city, reports The Guardian and other media.

The decision came from the Supreme Court in administrative cases in France, Conseil d’Etat, on June 21, 2022. This decision upholds an earlier ruling from a lower court.

“The new procedural rules for the public swimming pools in Grenoble affect (…) the proper functioning of the public service, and undermine the equal treatment of users, so that the neutrality of public services is compromised,” the court said.

Grenoble City Council voted to allow the continued use of burkini on May 16 this year, resulting in protests from conservative and far-right politicians.

– A victory for our “separatism” law, for secularism and above all for the republic, said French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin after today’s ruling.
