Scientists have warned governments about the threat of geoengineering

A group of scientists from different European countries demands to stop funding dangerous projects to reduce the temperature on the planet.

In an open letter published in the journal WIREs Climate Change, a group of scientists from around Europe warn the governments of leading countries that existing plans to reduce the effects of global warming can be dangerous. It is about protecting the planet from the sun’s rays, which will cool the Earth, and the temperature will not rise. Such geoengineering plans involve the release of billions of sulfur particles into the atmosphere, which will block a large amount of sunlight, reports Phys.

Countries around the world have pledged to limit Earth’s temperature rise to 1.5°C above mid-19th century levels, but scientists have said that threshold will be exceeded, possibly within this decade.

solar geoengineering

It is the failure to cut greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming that has prompted some politicians to resort to solar geoengineering, which involves placing reflective sulfur particles in the atmosphere to buy time for a more sustainable solution.

It has long been known that introducing large amounts of reflective particles into the upper atmosphere can cool the planet. But in an open letter, scientists from different countries say that such a decision will not give the desired result, and may lead to even worse consequences.

Possible consequences

For example, such actions would disrupt the monsoon rains in South Asia and West Africa, destroying crops on which hundreds of millions of people depend. Scientists also warn that if the filling of the atmosphere with reflective particles suddenly stops, then there is a high probability that the temperature on the planet will increase rapidly.

In addition, solar geoengineering technology will not stop the increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Scientists also say that this technology will deprive governments of incentives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists in their letter urge the international community to block funding for such experiments.

Introducing sulfur particles into the atmosphere is just one form of solar geoengineering. Some experts suggest creating reflective clouds or placing giant mirrors in space to reflect sunlight. The most innocuous proposals seem to be those in which experts propose to make the roofs of houses and road surfaces white.

As already wrote Focus, according to forecasts 2022 will be one of the hottest on the ground.

Scientists also found that for the first time in 24 thousand years on Earth there is so much warming going on.
