Heavy traffic on the roads: a third of the drivers checked exceeded speed

During a security operation, during which they focused on speeding on the roads in the Czech Republic on Friday, August 14, police found a total of 2,281 traffic violations during an inspection of 5,300 cars. Police published incomplete results on their website.

1740 drivers did not comply with the permitted speed, ie about a third of those inspected. However, the police did not say how high the overruns were. In several cases, the police also found out that people did not wear a seat belt while driving, that the technical condition of the cars did not meet the requirements or that the cars did not have a motorway sign. The drivers were informed in advance about the stands and the whole event.

“At the moment, the evaluation of the whole event is still in progress, and on the basis of the analyzes performed in various localities, the police will continue to focus on the most problematic places in the future,” said the police.

On Friday, more than 600 police officers checked compliance with the maximum permitted speed at approximately 900 locations in the Czech Republic. The locations were chosen not only by the police, but also by the public. Police criteria for selecting places included, among other things, the security situation in the locality, the number of accidents and the frequency of traffic.

Published results of Speed Marathon 2020
Offense Number of findings
Violation of set speed limits 1740
Failure to use seat belts 91
Unsatisfactory technical condition of vehicles 62
Ingestion of addictive substances 40
Vehicles without motorway signs 27

For the fifth year in a row, police patrols took part in a security operation called the Speed Marathon. Last year, they checked 7,500 cars and found 3,200 offenses. Two thirds of the offenses concerned speeding.

Police cite speed as one of the most common causes of traffic accidents. It is not just a speed higher than the holiday, ie over 50, respectively. 90 or 130 km / h, but at a disproportionate speed, ie higher than is appropriate in the place due to the driver’s abilities, the condition of the road and the characteristics of the vehicle or load.

According to police statistics, exceeding the maximum permitted speed was not one of the ten most numerous or ten most tragic causes of accidents on Czech roads in the last ten years.

Since 2009, the most frequent or tragic causes of accidents have always been inattention and some form of driving at excessive speeds. However, excessive speed cannot, in principle, be measured by radar.
