Growing Tensions and Attacks Surrounding the Monument to the Soviet Army

Tensions around the Monument to the Soviet Army continue to grow. In addition to a clash on the political front since yesterday, there is also one on the political-football front.

On the night of Thursday to Friday, the tent camp of the defenders of the monument was attacked by a group of supporters of its removal. It is said that the attackers are part of football agitations, and more precisely, of the capital “Levski”. They smashed the plaque with the inscription on the monument with a hammer. It was broken a few months ago by a disgruntled citizen and then restored by the BSP.

The new attack on the monument prompted “Vazrazhdane” leader Kostadin Kostadinov to lash out on Facebook against “Levski” fans, calling them “janissaries” and “young degenerates”. The National Fan Club “Levski” replied to Kostadinov that such talk “far from being useful for a political career, it is also for health.

In the meantime, fences are expected to be placed around the monument, as according to the local authorities it is dangerous. The procedure for announcing a competition for a proposal for what to do at the place of the Monument to the Soviet Army has also been launched.
Plans are to move the monument, but the process will be slow and unlikely to be completed by the end of the year. Soon, however, the monument is likely to be fenced off as unsafe. An examination of the plinth and the figures, the condition of which is currently unknown, must also be carried out.

Midnight attack and four arrested

Four people have been arrested in connection with a midnight attack on the tent camp in front of the Monument to the Soviet Army. The police were alerted shortly before midnight. SDVR teams were sent to the scene and found damage to the monument.

According to the official announcement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, two men aged 29, one aged 33 and one aged 26 were arrested. Among them there is a criminal.

At the scene, police found that a woman had been sprayed with spray and her purse had been stolen. Cases were filed for theft and hooliganism. Damages to the monument were also found. The plate with the inscription is broken “To the liberating Soviet Army from the grateful Bulgarian people”. It was also demolished at the beginning of the year, and this became an occasion for GERB leader Boyko Borisov to order the municipal councilors of the party to support the request of “Democratic Bulgaria” to dismantle the monument, which previously had been pending for 3 years without even being discussed .

Kostadinov: “Janissaries”

Attacking the monument activates its defenders.

The leader of “Vazrazhdane” Kostadin Kostadino released a post on Facebook. “Last night, young degenerates, fans of “Levski”, after the match of their team, gathered the courage to attack several women in the tents guarding the monument of the Soviet army in Sofia. There were 30 (some of them criminally active), the women – 3, the age of their mothers. Modern janissaries have no way of knowing that this is exactly what their predecessors, the janissaries of the time of the Ottoman Empire, did. They were sent to their hometowns on purpose to make them cry and insult their own mothers.”he wrote.

“The next time such degenerates decide to try, there will be no women. One more thing – I hope the normal supporters of the football team will separate themselves and at least apologize to the women for the attack on them.”Kostadinov added.

The response of the zealots

“The National Club of Levski Supporters has a long-standing and consistent position in support of the dismantling of the shameful and humiliating occupier’s monument in the Prince’s Garden. Without going deep into the pit called Bulgarian politics, we want to state to the leader of the “Vazrazhdane” party that you call Levski’s audience “janissaries”, it is far from useful for your political career, and also for your health. “You stick a monument on our heads and defile heaven and earth!”answered again on Facebook from the “Levski” National Fan Club.

Maya Manolova saw a spitz-commando

Maya Manolova appeared in front of the monument already on Thursday. “The commandos, called by Yordanka Fandakova and Traicho Traikov, and the entire right wing in Sofia, attacked the monument and the tents and ran rampant until a while ago”she stated.

Former Interior Minister Rumen Petkov, also a prominent opponent of moving the monument, also appeared at the monument. He stated that the judicial reform had failed and the only thing GERB and PP-DB could do was to demolish the monument. The attackers were sent to carry out a political mission, he added.

The chairman of BSP-Sofia, Ivan Takov, described those who attacked the monument and the tent camp as “neo-fascists” and added that the formation will once again restore the broken plaque.

The municipality launched the competition for an alternative to the monument

A few days ago, the regional administration in “Sredets”, whose mayor is Traicho Traikov, issued an order to install a construction fence and to dismantle the dangerous elements of the monument. It was sent to the regional governor Vyara Todeva, who commissioned “the urgent development of a Safety and Health Plan regarding the Monument to the Soviet Army”. On Thursday, the regional administration announced that the plan in question was ready and given to the municipality for approval.

On Friday, the regional administration condemned the attack on the monument. “We expect the perpetrators to bear the corresponding criminal and material responsibility. We state that the intended relocation of the sculptural elements and bas-reliefs can only be carried out legally, following the accelerated procedure undertaken for this purpose”writes in the position of regional governor Vyara Todeva.

Tent camp – illegal

The mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, explained that in reality the 24-hour tent camp violates the law, as it was agreed as a protest, and by law protests cannot take place after 10 p.m.

“Unfortunately, some politicians use the relocation of the Monument to the Soviet Army for a PR effect in connection with the local elections. In fact, the organizers, the leaders of the political parties who stand in front of the monuments are responsible for the lives and health of the people they lead to stand on all night. What worries me, really, is that people don’t get hurt in these political battles, that people don’t get hurt.”commented Fandakova on Friday.

She added that she had already signed a report from the chief architect Zdravko Zdravkov on the drawing up of a task for a competition for the Prince’s Garden. He must give an answer to the question of what should be in place of the Monument to the Soviet Army when it is removed and the figures from it sent to a museum. The announcement of the competition in question is part of the decision of the Metropolitan Municipal Council from March, with which the regional administration is asked to remove the monument for which it is responsible.
