Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Chancellor Angela Merkel say German being attacked by the latest wave Covid-19 completely.

Merkel described the current situation of Covid-19 in her country as a dramatic phenomenon.

“The current pandemic situation in Germany is so dramatic, I can’t put it in other words,” Merkel said, Wednesday (17/11).

Merkel’s statement came as Germany was faced with a very significant Covid-19 spike.

According to data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) as of Thursday (18/11), Germany’s daily Covid-19 infections reached 65,371 cases in the last 24 hours.

The figure is Germany’s highest daily Covid-19 case record since the start of the pandemic. Thursday (18/11).

This spike in cases has also triggered an increase in the number of inpatients in hospitals until they are overwhelmed. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) rooms in a number of hospitals are also starting to fill up

One hospital in Bavaria Freising, Germany, was even forced to send Covid-19 patients to a hospital in Italy because their ICU was full and lacked health workers.

“Last week, on Wednesday or Thursday, we had to send a patient by helicopter to Merano (Italy),” the medical director of the hospital in Freising, Thomas Marx, told AFP. AFP on Thursday (18/11).

Marx explained that the hospital where he worked at the time handled 13 cases in the ICU, while the room could only accommodate 10 people.

“We no longer have the capacity to accept them (Covid-19 patients), and hospitals around Bavaria are also full,” he added.

Head of RKI Lothar Wieler said the spike in Covid-19 did not even fully reflect the scale of infection in Germany. He assessed the spike in infections in Germany may be two or three times higher than the official data.

Germany also recorded an increase in the number of deaths by 264 cases from Wednesday (17/11) to Thursday (18/11). This addition brings the total number of people who have died from the pandemic in Germany to 98,000.

The average addition of Covid-19 cases in Germany in the past week also reached 336.9 cases per 100,000 people. The previous week, the average addition of corona infection cases was 249.1 cases.

Germany is one of the countries in western Europe with a low vaccination rate. So far, quoted CNN, only 67 percent of the German population have received the full dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Meanwhile, there are still 33 percent of Germans who have not received the first dose of the vaccine at all.

Low vaccination rates have contributed to the surge in cases of Covid-19 in Germany, according to experts.

As a result of this new wave of Covid-19, Germany has begun to impose strict rules on citizens who have not received a complete vaccination.

The implementation of this strict rule has begun in the German capital, Berlin, starting Monday (15/11). Berliners who wish to enter bars, restaurants, cinemas or other entertainment venues must show proof of complete vaccination or proof of having recovered from coronavirus infection within six months.

Meanwhile, the new governing party coalition has also submitted a proposal for the overall handling of Covid-19 in Germany to the parliament.

Under this proposal, German citizens wishing to board buses and trains must show proof of a vaccine or negative Covid-19 results.
