Germany Discussing Complete Lifting of Remaining Entry and Visa Restrictions with China

As announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the complete lifting of the last remaining entry and visa restrictions is under discussion.

The German government lifted most restrictions on people entering the country from China on March 1.

However, the entry ban for tourists from China is still in place. Meanwhile, other European Union (EU) countries such as Austria and Switzerland already issue visas to Chinese tourists.

Before the pandemic, Chinese tourists were one of the main sources of income for the tourism industry, spending about $200 billion worldwide in 2019, according to estimates by US bank Citi.

In 2019, 1.5 million people from China visited Germany, but in 2022 this number dropped to almost 180,000.
