GDL rail strike: failures and delays continue

Essen.
The train drivers’ union GDL at Deutsche Bahn continues on Tuesday. There are massive disabilities until Wednesday morning.

Because of the strike of the German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL), there will be further restrictions in train traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia on Tuesday. According to Deutsche Bahn, the replacement schedule, which came into force on Monday morning, has been stable so far.

“Failures must therefore only be expected selectively and without a regional focus,” said a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn on Tuesday morning. In long-distance traffic every third train runs, in local traffic there are regional differences with regard to delays and cancellations.

Strike: Massive restrictions until Wednesday morning

Until Wednesday morning 2 a.m., travelers have to be prepared for massive restrictions. In addition to the train drivers, employees in the infrastructure – for example in the signal boxes – are again called on to stop their work. The GDL has been striking the freight traffic since Saturday.

It is the second strike in the ongoing collective bargaining dispute between Deutsche Bahn and the GDL. About two weeks ago, the union had already paralyzed large parts of the passenger traffic for two days. The wage dispute is, among other things, about more money for employees. Both sides agree on the level of future wages and salaries: there should be 3.2 percent more. However, there is disagreement about the timing of the payout. There are also unanswered questions about the company pension, the amount of a possible corona premium and the GDL’s sphere of influence.

On the main axis Dortmund – Essen – Duisburg – Düsseldorf – Cologne, commuters still get off lightly. The regional express trains RE1, 6 and 11 are operated by Abellio or National Express, which are not on strike. But there can also be problems here, for example due to other trains standing on the line.
