From controversy on efficacy to shortage of supply… Nerve warfare over vaccine

In Europe, the supply of vaccines is delayed, unlike contracts, so conflicts with pharmaceutical companies endless.

This time, there is a controversy about the efficacy of the contract cancellation over the AstraZeneca vaccine, which the Korean government said it plans to inoculate from next month.

Reporter Kim Jung-won reports.

“The AstraZeneca vaccine showed an 8% immune effect in people over 65.”

This is the content reported by two German daily newspapers citing government officials.

AstraZeneca immediately refuted that it was not true.

Even over 65 years of age, 100% of the antibodies were formed after the second vaccination.

The German government also said it was a speculative knight.

However, he pointed out that it is true that AstraZeneca has not provided sufficient data on clinical trials.

“I don’t want to get in the way of speculative reporting. (But) it’s clear that (AstraZeneca) clinical trial data for older people are lacking.”

The European Union also said it could go a step further and exclude older people from being vaccinated.

“You can focus on a specific age group and approve the use, or you can conclude that you should target a wider age group.”

The European Union has already signed a contract with AstraZeneca for 450 billion won.

However, it seems that AstraZeneca, which decided to supply 80 million doses by the end of March, suddenly announced that only 31 million doses are possible.

“The European Union has the right to know how much AstraZeneca has produced so far and in which countries it has been supplied.”

In particular, it is suspected that AstraZeneca, a British company, supplies vaccines only to the UK.

For this reason, we are considering banning the export of vaccines produced at the Belgian plant outside the EU, including the UK.

In response, AstraZeneca CEO said, “The amount of vaccine is not enough anyway,” and “What’s wrong with the EU only allowing vaccinations to young people?”
