At the Cesar Awards ceremony, France’s counterpart to the Oscars, Judith Godrèche, a well-known French actress, will make a powerful speech on sexual violence, shedding light on the industry’s troubling reality. Judith Godrèche Speaks Out Against the Omerta
Judith Godrèche, an esteemed actress within the French film industry, has recently exposed an unspoken code of silence, known as “omerta,” that has allowed abuse to persist. Godrèche has publicly accused two film directors of raping and sexually abusing her when she was a teenager, sparking a wave of allegations.
In a groundbreaking move, Godrèche has filed an official complaint against Benoît Jacquot, a prominent French director, and Jacques Doillon, another influential figure in the industry. The allegations date back to her teenage years when Godrèche was only 14 and 15, with both directors being significantly older than her.
Challenging Denials from Prominent Directors
Both Benoît Jacquot and Jacques Doillon have vehemently denied Godrèche’s allegations. In interviews, Jacquot expressed his disbelief and affirmed his love for Godrèche, but denied any abuse of authority. Similarly, Doillon released a statement condemning what he called “arbitrary denunciations, false accusations, and lies.”
Godrèche’s accusations have emboldened other women to come forward. Isild Le Besco, a fellow actress, accused Jacquot of psychological and physical violence during their relationship, which started when she was 16. Anna Mouglalis, another actress, accused Doillon of sexual assault in a separate incident.
A Resurgence of #MeToo in French Cinema
Godrèche’s courageous testimony is the latest development in the #MeToo movement within French cinema. In 2017, she was among the actresses who accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. The allegations against powerful figures within the industry have sparked a reckoning and given a voice to the victims.
The French film industry has experienced sexual misconduct accusations before. The controversial recognition of Roman Polanski during the Cesar Awards ignited protests by women’s rights activists. Actor Adèle Haenel, who herself faced sexual assault in the industry, walked out of the ceremony when Polanski was awarded best director in absentia.
Polanski’s case is not unique, as French cinema continues to grapple with disturbing allegations against stars like Gérard Depardieu. The industry finds itself at a critical juncture, confronting its past and working towards creating a safer and more respectful environment for its artists.
