Free is preparing a conference to present the Freebox V8

It’s no longer a rumor since the official account of Free on Twitter confirmed the information: the Freebox V8 will soon be released! It was in response to a tweet from Georgette, the “Grandma of Cantal”, an account that Free likes to bring out for new announcements. To tell the truth, we had known since the beginning of the year that a new Freebox was in the ranks, but the launch had then been canceled, confinement requires.

Freebox universe reports that the Paris headquarters of Iliad, the parent company of Free, is preparing for a conference. The company has yet to invite the press, but has reserved nearby parking spaces for next week. If everything goes as usual, the conference could take place next Tuesday, July 7, 2020.

What to expect from this eighth generation which should not replace the Freebox Delta released at the end of 2018, but which should constitute a mid-range? She should a priori run on Android TV, like the Freebox mini 4K it could replace, and it should be called “Freebox POP”. A few days ago, Netflix had given some information by mistake about the new box, which would be 4K compatible with its Dolby Atmos, a function that is still expected on the V7 in the process.

By delving into the source code of this future Freebox, we also know that it should reach 2.5 Gbit / s in optical fiber. This is less than the Freebox Delta and its 10 Gbit / s maximum, but better than the rest of the range which is “content” with 1 Gbit / s in optical fiber, which would place there too in a mid-range enough logic.

Finally, Freebox universe learned that Free would have chosen to reduce development time and costs by working with a partner to design this box. Until then, the company used to do everything in-house, but only the Freebox Pop case would be specific. Exterior design is one of the few pieces of information that has not (yet) leaked, but we should be quickly fixed!
