Found a new heavy-duty antibiotic – Health News

This drug has a unique approach to killing bacteria. Scientists have never seen anything like it before.

Researchers from Canada invented a new substance called corbomycin, which could become a component of a new generation of antibiotics, Nature writes.

New drugs of this class are needed because of the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. Each year, 700 thousand people become its victims, but WHO believes that soon there will be millions. Corbomycin, together with the lesser-known antibiotic, complementatin, kill bacteria due to the blocking of the functional cells in their walls. For the first time, science has observed this phenomenon.

Bacteria have a wall around the surface of their cells, which ensures their shape and is a source of energy. Antibiotics, like penicillin, kill bacteria by preventing the construction of this wall.

How does the new antibiotic work?

But new drugs do the opposite. They do not allow the walls to collapse. And if this process is blocked, then the cells are locked up, they cannot expand and grow, which causes their death.

Mouse tests have shown that these antibiotics block infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, a group of drug-resistant bacteria that cause serious infections like sepsis and toxic shock syndrome. Both antibiotics belong to the group of glycopeptides that produce soil bacteria.
