Football: ex-Argentina coach Bilardo diagnosed positive at Covid-19 by mistake

Carlos Bilardo, Argentina coach during his 1986 World Cup coronation in Mexico, was mistakenly diagnosed with Covid-19, his brother said Sunday.

“My brother has nothing, the laboratory was wrong,” wrote Jorge Bilardo on Twitter.

Carlo Bilardo had been hospitalized on Saturday following a positive test at Covid-19.

Asymptomatic, the former technician of the Albiceleste was admitted to the Argentine Diagnostic Institute in the capital.

Bilardo, 82, who suffers from a neurodegenerative disease, lives in a retirement home located in the Almagro district of Buenos Aires, where ten other people tested positive for Covid-19.

Bilardo directed the Argentine selection from 1982 to 1990, guiding it to the world title in 1986 and to another final, with Diego Maradona for strategist, in 1990 in Italy. The Albiceleste lost to West Germany (1-0).

Argentina recorded 1,233 deaths from the coronavirus and 59,920 people were infected with the disease. Given the sharp increase in cases, the government announced on Friday a strengthening of the containment measures implemented on March 20.

In Buenos Aires and its suburbs, the return to strict social isolation is expected between July 1 and 17.
