Fire in Brussels WTC tower extinguished, no injuries

The fire that broke out on the 27th floor of the WTC tower in Brussels on Thursday afternoon was extinguished. This is reported by the Brussels fire brigade. He had requested reinforcement from other emergency zones to pump up the fire extinguishing water, but that turned out to be unnecessary. The fire could be extinguished with large powder extinguishers. There were no injuries in the fire.

The fire broke out this afternoon in a technical room on the 27th floor of the WTC tower, near the North Station. The fire started when insulating material caught fire. The fire caused a plume of black smoke, which could be seen from afar.

“Upon arrival, we were told that there were still people in the building, but it turned out to be four workers who were on a lower floor,” said fire spokesman Walter Derieuw. “They were not in danger and could be evacuated without any problem.” There are therefore no injuries.

Due to the renovation works, there is no water supply in the tower, so that the Brussels fire brigade requested reinforcement from the emergency zones of Antwerp, Tollembeek, Zaventem, Geraardsbergen and Vilvoorde. “They arrived quickly, but in the end we didn’t need their pumps because the fire could be extinguished with large powder extinguishers,” says Derieuw. “But it was a good test of our cooperation with the other zones.”

The Brussels police set up a perimeter around the WTC building, while some STIB bus lines were temporarily interrupted. Those buses now drive normally again.
