Fear of extinction of Earth’s species, Scientists Plan to Build a Seed Bank on the Moon

Suara.com – For scientist at the University of Arizona put forward a proposal to preserve life on Earth in the event of a global crisis and doomsday by building seed bank on the Moon.

The team of experts plans to create a storage place for life in the form of seeds, whether human or animal and plant, in order to avoid the risks that the Earth will face naturally or due to human activities.

The proposal submitted at the IEEE Aerospace Conference last week contained the Lunar Ark.

Sperm, egg, spore and seed samples from 6.7 million species will be cryogenically frozen so that they can be safely protected on the Moon.

Although not an ideal location in terms of ease of access, scientists see the Moon as a “safe place” if the Day of Judgment strikes the Earth and destroys all life there.

In particular, lava tubes and craters on the Moon could be ideal places to build such seed banks.

The concept is similar to Svalbard’s famous Seed Barn, but the difference is that the climate crisis cannot affect the specimens stored on the Moon.

There are hundreds of lava tubes forming under the surface of the Moon.

Thanks to the rock above, the tube is protected from radiation, micrometeorites and extremely low temperatures underground. That location will be an asset for storing seed samples.

Professor Jaken Thanga who presented the concept explained that they estimate the facility will be built with about 250 flights.

In comparison, the construction of the International Space Station (ISS) required 40 flights.

“We have thought about the problems and solutions that will be faced, such as the condition of the lava tubes on the cold Moon that can affect the metals used in this facility. But, we have a solution using superconductors,” said Professor Thanga. IFL Science, Friday (12/3/2021).

While this ambitious project may not be fully ready for implementation, a team of scientists has also proposed a way to study the lunar lava tube using a jumping and flying robot called SphereX.

Not only that, these lava tubes might not only be used to house the seeds of Earth’s species, but they would also be ideal for man’s permanent existence on the Moon.
