With his bow tie, round glasses and spirit-filled dandy manners, Philippe Daverio has been the star of Milan’s cultural and artistic life for over 45 years. Her friend Andree Ruth Shammah, at the top of the Franco Parenti Theater, gave the news of the disappearance.

Many are mourning his death today at the age of 70, after an illness that had seen him lean, but did not lose his traditional way of doing and participating in city life. Gallerist, art historian, writer, essayist, Daverio was born in Mulhouse in Alsace on October 17, 1949 to an Italian father, Napoleone Daverio, a builder, and an Alsatian mother, Aurelia Hauss. He was the fourth of six children and had had a nineteenth-century education, even without graduating. Everyone knew him in Milan since the seventies when he opened his “Galleria Philippe Daverio”, in via Monte Napoleone 6, where he mainly dealt with avant-garde movements of the first half of the twentieth century. He opened a second one in New York in 1986. As a gallery owner and publisher he has set up many exhibitions, and published about fifty titles, among which we remember: Catalog raisonné of the work of Giorgio De Chirico between 1924 and 1929; General and reasoned catalog of the work of Gino Severini.
