Last Kennedy loses political mandate – politics

John F. Kennedy’s great-nephew is defeated in the US Senate primary

Boston (AFP) – As of January, no member of the legendary Kennedy dynasty is expected to hold a political mandate in the USA. On Tuesday, 39-year-old Joe Kennedy III lost. the Democratic primary for a seat in the US Senate in the state of Massachusetts – a first for a member of the Kennedy family in their home state. Because the 39-year-old great-nephew of former US President John F. Kennedy is not allowed to run for another term in the House of Representatives because of his candidacy for the Senate, he will have to resign from his position as MP in January. This means that no member of the Kennedy family will have a political mandate.

Kennedy said he had congratulated his competitor Markey and assured him of his “support” in the election campaign in the coming months. The vote count wasn’t over, but Markey was clearly in the lead with 53.5 percent, ahead of Kennedy with 46.5 percent.

Kennedy was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2013. The grandson of the murdered former attorney general Robert F. Kennedy took up political office in the fourth generation of the family. His departure is a historic turning point for the Kennedy family. Since 1947 – with the exception of two years – a Kennedy has held an elected political office in the United States.

His opponent, Markey, is a political veteran who served as a member of the House of Representatives for 37 years before being elected to the Senate in 2013. The 74-year-old belongs to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. He is supported, among others, by the aspiring progressive Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, with whom Markey had worked out the so-called Green New Deal against climate change.
