Facial Swelling: A Possible Sign of Lung Cancer

Al-Marsad Newspaper: Researchers have revealed a sign that appears on the face indicating that you have lung cancer.

And they said: There is a sign that may appear on the face, which is swelling, and it may be a major sign of lung cancer.

Facial swelling, although this cause is less known, occurs when a tumor puts pressure on the superior vena cava (SVC), which connects the head to the heart. The thin walls of this vital vein make it vulnerable to pressure.

According to Macmillan Cancer Support, most cases of SVCO are caused by lung cancer.

They explained: “Most cases of SVCO (superior vena cava obstruction) are caused by lung cancer. Cancer may press directly on the SVC or it may spread to nearby lymph nodes, which become swollen. Other possible causes: Other cancers of the lymph nodes in the chest

These include lymphomas and cancers of the testicle, breast, intestine and esophagus, in which a blood clot forms in a vein and blocks blood flow.

Individuals may also experience swelling in the neck, arms, and upper chest due to vein pressure. Other accompanying symptoms may include shortness of breath, headache, vision changes, blue veins on the chest, or dizziness.

The NHS website highlights that lung cancer is rare in those under the age of 40 and mostly affects older people.
