Exhibition Honoring Women Artists in Upper Manhattan

“I really like the idea that we have spaces to present art so that people around us can come and appreciate it and learn,” said artist Palen Obesa.

Obesa talks about her work, the girl with fear, made through engraving.

“He talks about an accident I had last year and how afterwards I have had a very tangible relationship with the concept of death. You can see a younger version of me with long hair, looking at my reflection that turns into a skeleton,” Obesa explained.

An exhibition honoring female artists from Upper Manhattan is held at the United Palace.

This is the thirteenth year that the gallery “Women in the Heights” or “Women in Washington Heights” brings together this collection.

The walls contain pieces made using different techniques, using paints, fabrics and much more.

It even includes the verses of poets like Ayling Domínguez.

“The piece is called Luz and it is the name of my grandmother who passed by a few years ago“explained Domínguez.

“It’s talking about how the wind carries the word and the stories of our ancestors.”

Andrea Arroyo, a Mexican and resident of Washington Heights, has been the exhibition’s curator all this time, thanks to the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance.

He says that the 50 pieces by 39 artists are a very diverse collection.

“Artists ranging in age from their twenties to their eighties. From all kinds of backgrounds, race, nationality. It’s very beautiful and really reflects what our community is,” Arroyo said.

The show is free and open to the public on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays – but it is possible to make a reservation for other days.

The curator hopes that the community will appreciate the artists and be inspired by them.

This exhibition was going to end next week, but they have decided to extend it for another month until the end of May so that the community has more time to see the work of these artists.
