Education for children in Uganda | educational magazine

Due to conflicts and the resulting increase in the number of people suffering from hunger, many children in Omugo, Uganda, cannot be adequately cared for. The project “Peace promotion through (early) childhood education” initiated by World Vision is part of the long-term development project in Omugo with the focus on livelihoods, child protection and social coexistence.

The project focuses on promoting peaceful coexistence between refugees and their host communities through (early) childhood education and violence prevention measures. For this purpose, 500 particularly vulnerable girls and boys were identified, such as orphaned children, unaccompanied minor refugees and children with disabilities, who are preferably involved in activities.

Five so-called Child Friendly Spaces / Early Childhood Development Centers have been set up, which are contact points for psychosocial counseling and offer space for playing and learning. Age-appropriate training is offered there, ranging from making toys (balls made from banana peels, cars made from plastic bottles) to protection against sexual exploitation. Since last year, eduwo has also been helping together with its users – with a small but important contribution.

Why education is so important in Uganda

Parents are informed about children’s rights, child rearing and nutrition through training courses and workshops. Through play and leisure activities, children are taught skills and provided with care and protection, which contributes to peaceful coexistence, especially in refugee communities. In this way, early childhood education in Uganda through World Vision can make an important contribution to promoting peaceful coexistence.

Education is essential for children in refugee communities as they come from challenging and difficult circumstances – it is important that they acquire the necessary skills and abilities to adapt to a new environment.

Education can help them develop a sense of security and well-being while boosting their self-esteem. In addition, the children learn to understand and apply constructive conflict resolution strategies, which enables them to build peaceful relationships with each other and thus promote peaceful coexistence in refugee communities.

Without an adequate education, the children in Omugo have far fewer prospects in life. They are more likely to be victims of poverty, health problems, violence and crime than children who receive a good education. There is also a higher risk of discrimination and abuse because they are less aware of their own rights. Through education, together with the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) and Child-Friendly Space Omugo, we want to offer children in Uganda the opportunity to take charge of their own lives.
