Dutchman (69) killed in German mountain hike

A 69-year-old hiker from the Netherlands was killed in a mountain hike in Germany on Saturday afternoon. During a trip near the town of Windeck, southeast of Cologne, the man plunged about 40 meters for unknown reasons.

The victim’s wife called the emergency services, but they initially reasoned incorrectly because she was unable to provide the correct location, local media report. When they arrived at the man’s place, nothing more could be done than confirm his death. CPR and the arrival of a rescue helicopter were to no avail.

The wife was taken care of by the German victim support service.

A person was also killed in Austria this weekend during a mountain hike. A 57-year-old woman plunged into a 60-meter abyss near Bad Gastein, between Innsbruck and Graz.

According to the police, the woman had gone off the mountain path during a rest to pose for a photo. She lost her balance and fell.
