DSHS SnowTrex Cologne’s Melanie Preußer with ninth MVP medal

In the last game of the season, the second division volleyball players had to admit defeat to the champions of the 2019/20 season. With 1: 3 (21:25, 25:16, 23:25, 22:25) the team of coach Jimmy Czimek lost in the bizarre Volleys Borken. Melanie Preusser was awarded her ninth MVP medal this season.

Borken started the first set strongly in the area of serve and acceptance, so that the Cologne women only found their way into their game at the end of the set and were able to keep up with the opponent. A 21:23 connection was no longer enough to win the set. In the second round, the cathedral townspeople also started with a 1: 5 deficit. Within a few minutes, the team around captain Viola Torliene turned the score and took a 10: 5 lead. Time and again, Cologne scored with the “Cologne Cathedral”, the high attack over the middle and made life difficult for the Borken defense. After the set equalization, sets 3 and 4 ran at eye level, but each with the better ending for the home team. In set three, Borken managed to score the last two decisive points at 23:23 and in the fourth round Cologne had to tear it down at 21:22, so that the points ultimately deserved to stay in Borken.

“In terms of points, it was generally balanced with 91:91, but Borken simply scored the decisive points in the first, third and fourth set. During this season we have always felt that we couldn’t always call up our performance when we were stressed, ”said the Cologne coach, looking back on the past season. “That is completely normal, however, we have turned half our team inside out for this season – the happier we are that we were runner-up. If someone had promised us this before the season started, we would have immediately accepted it with thanks, ”the Cologne coach continued.

Because not only because of the Corona situation, but also because Melanie Preusser was unable to play a few games in the middle of the season due to injury and because Silke Schrieverhoff broke his foot, the team had to find itself again and again. In particular, the complete failure of Silke Schrieverhoff, who earned the respect of the opponents in the first half of the season as a diagonal attacker with three gold MVP awards, hit the Cologne women hard. Middle blocker Viola Torliene took over the diagonal position, but first had to learn it from scratch and implement it directly in the competition.

How important Melanie Preußer was for the Cologne team this season was also shown in the game against Borken, in which she received her ninth MVP medal (seven gold and two silver) from the opposing coach. So she also got the runner-up in the MVP league ranking behind Anne Krohn (Stralsund). The Cologne team will sit down next week and plan the next season.

For DSHS SnowTrex Cologne played: Hannah Bolsius, Viktoria Dörschug, Franziska Kalde, Isabelle Liebchen, Marina Müller, Sophie Peterhoff, Melanie Preußer, Vera Schmidt-Narischkin, Kirsten Tälkers, Viola Torliene, Leonie Wienkämper
