Dresden correspondence published by Clara and Robert Schumann | nmz

24.10.21 –

Dresden – Clara and Robert Schumann wrote more than 100 letters to acquaintances, friends, colleagues and prominent citizens and families in Dresden. “They cover a period of almost 70 years and thus reveal exciting insights into bourgeois life in Dresden in the 19th century,” said co-editor Carlos Lozano Fernandez on Friday. –

Together with Renate Brunner he edited these letters as a volume within the Robert and Clara Schumann letter edition. Together with the Schumann House in Zwickau and the Leipzig Academy of Sciences, the Dresden University of Music has been researching the correspondence between the two musicians since 2008. Since then, more than 30 volumes have been published.

In December 1844 Robert Schumann and his wife Clara had moved from Leipzig to Dresden with their children Marie, Elise and Julie. “The couple’s move seems to have been a much more conscious decision than it previously appeared. While Clara maintained excellent relationships as a pianist with some of the most influential Dresden families, Robert, as editor of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, was very well informed about the structures of musical life in the city through letters from staff and readers, ”explained Lozano Fernandez.
