Although the breast milk donations decreased during the first months of the pandemic, the quantities of the product have been maintained, since many of the moms who were not working stored more milk than normal.

According to Maria Elena Cámara López, coordinator of the Milk Bank of the Secretariat of Health of Guanajuato, they have a registry of some 400 women who donate milk.

“Probably the number of donors decreased, but not the amounts of milk, the milk we received were very similar amounts, it was not a decrease, in fact the amounts depend on the new donors who enter, the time they last donating, but the pandemic it did not affect the quality of donations from mothers, ”he commented.

He noted that requirements for a mother to be a milk donor is that she must have a baby within the first two years of life, you must be a healthy mother and your child is properly fed with human milk.

The minor must not be fed formula or some other liquid and in the case of those who are more than six months old, the feeding must be complementary, since that would imply that the surpluses that the mother has is not required by the baby.

“The joke is that you do not take milk from your own baby, but what he does not need you can donate for other children. When the mother already has the intention to donate, she can obviously say, of course, I have surplus milk, so we do a series of tests, also an interview to verify that she is suitable to donate ”, he added.

He explained that the characteristics necessary for the mother to donate is that she has a excellent health, of feeding and already afterwards he is enrolled in a donor census and to be able to go for the milk either collecting center closer to your home or even to your own home.

The director said that where they were most affected in donation matters was during the first two months of the pandemic, but that from the second year of the lockdown they did more outreach work and more women got to know about this project.

She commented that they work for support groups that are a strong source of monthly donors and invited women with these characteristics to come to the Milk Bank to make your donations.
