The dog was first spotted in Switzerland in March. Since then, he has been watched by specialist teams from Switzerland and Germany, but they had not yet managed to catch him.

When it turned out that Sam would walk into the Netherlands, Dog Search Group Gelderse Vallei (HZGV) took over the coordination.

Sam was spotted for the first time in the Netherlands on July 30, in the Gelderland village of Azewijn. From there he followed his journey via Lathum, Kronenburg, Tiel, Gorinchem and Amsterdam to Den Helder.
Dangerous route
The dog has taken quite a few risks during its journey. “With every report he was close to an N-road, or even on an N-road. But Sam continued his journey through the Netherlands, straight ahead,” HZGV writes on Facebook.
“After Den Helder it was impossible to go straight ahead. The straight line that he had walked all those months came to an end in the head of North Holland. Sam was confused and actually stayed longer than a day in one place in Den Helder. This was the moment when we had to switch quickly. ”

Ultimately, Sam was imprisoned in Callantsoog, where he was sitting in someone’s garden. “The moment was there: Sam was finally, after so many months and miles, safe. His journey was over, and his new journey – one of love and attention – can begin for him.”
Owner unknown
Despite the long journey, Sam is doing well. He has been taken to a shelter, where he can relax. It is still unknown who his owner is. The dog does not have a chip.
