DBritish Finance Minister Sajid Javid has resigned. This was preceded by a dispute with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, reports the station BBC, Johnson had made the dismissal of all of Javid’s advisors a condition for him to remain in office. Javid declined to do so. Johnson had only appointed the former manager of Deutsche Bank and former interior minister to his cabinet in July 2019.
Rishi Sunak, former Secretary General in the Ministry of Finance, is to be his successor. That reports the Reuters news agency citing Sky News,
A counselor for Javid was released in Augustafter the security clearance had been withdrawn. Internal Johnson government documents regarding Operation Yellowhammer had previously been leaked.
Johnson also surprisingly fired the Minister for Northern Ireland, Julian Smith, on Thursday. In addition, Economics Minister Andrea Leadsom, Environment Minister Theresa Villiers and several State Secretaries had to take their hats off. Attorney General Geoffrey Cox announced his resignation via Twitter after Johnson asked him to resign.
At first, observers had expected only marginal restructuring of the cabinet. A minister called Javid’s resignation to the BBC a “crazy” decision. The budget will be presented in London in four weeks. The government is expected to meet in a new composition on Friday.
