Digital schools on the rise in pandemic

MEXICO CITY.- While 20 thousand private schools are about to close or have already closed and the public ones seek to adapt to online teaching, 100% digital schools are emerging, which have aggressive investment plans in Mexico.

For example, there is Global Open University (GOU), a 100% digital European university, which is entering Mexico with a budget of two million euros, about 48 million 627 thousand pesos. It will offer workshops and later it will launch into competition with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, said its spokesperson, Arturo de la Peña.

In an interview with Excelsior, the GOU Director of Communication acknowledged that times have changed and that students have changed, so they are preparing to take a big leap in terms of digital education.

It would be necessary to make a difference between what is distance online education and digital education, they are two different things. Online or distance education is an education where a teacher needs to be, remote formats are television, video, satellite, radio, etc. Digital ones allow you greater flexibility, whether you have an education with or without a teacher ”, he explained.

He mentioned that studies have been done that indicate that students remember 10% of what they see, and less than 50% of what they see and hear. However, they retain 80% of what they see, hear and do, therefore, “it is not only about jumping from a face-to-face blackboard to a screen, but the experience must have practice, with the student’s experience, that is why digital systems are taking into account the new profile of the student, it is a new model that works ”, mentioned De la Peña.

According to the executive, something similar to what happened with the emergence of Fintech, which revolutionized the financial sector, is happening in the world of education.

The education sector is not going to return to 100% as we were before the pandemic, it is definitely going to be transformed in one way or another, ”he said.

According to data from GOU, during confinement, the purchase of online education in Mexico grew 33%, which is used by more than 30 million students and this trend is on the rise,

Virtual classrooms and online education platforms saw adoption never before seen, as home internet access and device availability became essential for distance learning and teaching. The market showed a greater demand for financial support and tuition adjustment ”, considered Ángel Estrada, Lead Partner of EY – Parthenon in the practice of education for the North Latin America region.

For his part, José Manuel Jiménez, an expert in Higher Education and Distance Education Policies, commented that “past attempts to integrate technology into education systems failed because they focused solely on bringing the same content from a classroom to a mobile device. That’s not enough. These tools are nothing, if they are not accompanied by an academic plan that achieves true intellectual development and not only by heart ”.

IN FIGURES

  • 9 to 21% of family spending is for education
  • 33% increased the purchase of online education
  • Of the five million 500 thousand students from the private sector, about 2.3 million will be transferred to the official
