Diesel: Euro 6 are clean Assurdo prohibit their use

The stop to all diesel cars, even the most modern Euro 6, is debating. The trigger of the controversy is known: besieged by smog and pollution for PM10, in Rome last week the Rays administration reacted by banishing from the “Green Belt” of the city not only the old petrol cars up to Euro 2, but even those equipped with the most advanced diesel engines. And such a drastic intervention is also spoken in other cities.

These are the most recent rumblings of a real war, the one conducted by various public administrations against diesel, which since Dieselgate’s time has ended up on the accused’s bench as the main person responsible for the pollution. A battle lost for now, if it is true that the blockades decided in the capital have not produced any decrease in fine dust in the air, while, on the contrary, there has been an increase. All while, due to the stop, many motorists were unable to collect their newly purchased Euro 6 diesel vehicle. Harm and mockery.

«It is absurd, in this way it is overcome locally the European and international legislation, according to which these vehicles are instead suitable to circulate “. To speak is Angelo Onorati, full professor at the Energy Department of the Polytechnic of Milan, where he teaches in courses of internal combustion machines and engines. According to Onorati, blocking the traffic of Euro 6 vehicles of category B, C, D-Temp is a measure “without any impact, because they have emissions so low that their exclusion from the roads is irrelevant and ineffective”. And that moreover “creates confusion in those who are ready to buy a new car, just when instead the renewal of a fleet of vehicles which is now very old and polluting on average should be encouraged”.

If we then take the very latest Euro 6D-Temp, explains Professor Onorati, “the emissions of these new engines are so low that other sources of particulate matter in traffic, that is, tires that wear out with rolling, the wear of the asphalt and that of the brakes, are polluting a lot of more”.

After all, the numbers speak clearly: a Euro 6D-Temp emits 5 milligrams every kilometer, while “the mere wear of tires, of milligrams per kilometer produces about 20 to 50”. The fact remains, however, that a series of tests, commissioned by the Transport & Environment association on a Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi and one Opel Astra 1.6 CDTi (both Euro 6d-Temp approved), would have highlighted peaks of emissions out of the norm when cleaning the Dpf. How is it possible?

«The Real Driving Emission cycle, or RDE, lasts about two hours – replies Onorati -, it is carried out by mounting a real chemical laboratory on the machine, to measure emissions, and already includes the effect of a regeneration, which leads to a peak in emissions, but which is already considered in the global calculation, and needn’t worry. Also because these cleaning cycles take up a very short space of time compared to the entire life of the machine ».

But then the diesel is finished, as the detractors say, or not? «No, diesel is a mature technology that will evolve again with the advent of the Euro 7 and that, in the medium term, will be able to get together with petrol engines to have particulate emissions so small as to have an impact practically zero ».
