Berlin. The annual meeting of the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO) begins today in Berlin. As usual, the event will be held together with the Austrian and Swiss partners. This year the symposium will take place as a hybrid solution: on site in the “CityCube Berlin” and in the livestream. For four days, experts from various fields will present the latest findings on the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases and cancer.
“This year, the congress stands for mutual exchange,” said Andreas Mackensen, congress president of the German Society for Hematology and Oncology. Last year, the symposium was only broadcast online due to the corona. “We have to get back to the conversation,” said the congress director in favor of the event on site.
The main focus this year is on the use of RNA vaccines for the treatment of tumors in cancer patients. Researcher Özlem Türeci (Biontech) will give a lecture on this Saturday. RNA vaccines have evolved from tumor vaccines to corona vaccines in order to contain the coronavirus. Research is now to be continued into how the vaccines can be used for immunotherapy against cancer. It is important to talk about how the coronavirus vaccines can be used in people with cancer. After all, the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) recommends vaccinating cancer patients. “Vaccinating cancer patients does not represent an increased risk. However, it is not clear whether the vaccines will work in those affected by certain types of cancer,” explains Mackensen.

Digitization and AI in medicine
The annual conference should allow discussions about new technical possibilities, so the congress director. “Digitization and artificial intelligence are big topics in medicine.” The aim is to talk about how artificial intelligence can help to integrate large data sets into clinical decision-making. Digital systems could, among other things, facilitate the exchange of patient data between practices and hospitals and automate treatment processes.
In addition to technical questions, socio-political issues are to be discussed. It is important this year to deal with medically supervised suicide, which is a relevant topic for cancer patients in particular. After the Federal Constitutional Court overturned the ban on “commercial promotion of suicide”, ethical and professional questions still need to be clarified. Finally, the DGHO annual congress will deal with other topics relating to the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic-related restrictions not only made communication with patients more difficult, but also among doctors. The congress will take place from October 1st to 4th. Participants can follow 236 sessions.
