Miami-Dade County authorities shared more details about the shooting that occurred on the morning of Wednesday, April 10, in the city of Hialeah, which left a person dead. According to Lieutenant Eddie Rodríguez, spokesman for the Hialeah Police Department, the incident was considered a self-defense shooting.
The middle Local 10 News indicates that the victim, identified as Christian Rueda, 26 years old, would have gone to a home near West 13th Lane and 46th Street to confront his ex-girlfriend, Victoria Marie González, 25 years old, and a friend of hers, identified like Omar Jamal Huggins, 23.
During the incident, Rueda, who had a history of domestic violence, confronted Huggins, an argument that escalated quickly.
Huggins, who was legally carrying a firearm, informed Rueda of this in an attempt to calm the situation, however, Rueda began a struggle trying to snatch the weapon, which triggered a series of fatal shots.
Both Huggins and Gonzalez remained at the scene while police officers responded to the scene, and were later taken to Hialeah Police Headquarters for questioning by detectives.
The police spokesman indicated that both cooperated with the investigation, and that authorities concluded that the shooting was justified as self-defense.
The crime scene was examined by experts, who collected evidence from the house, parking lot and nearby vehicles. The place remained cordoned off for hours.
According to the Hialeah Police Department, Rueda had an extensive criminal history that included previous charges of domestic harassment and assault against the woman. This could explain the reaction of Huggins, who was at the scene and tried to defend González.
Neighbors indicated that they were awakened by the sound of gunshots, something that took them by surprise because it was a relatively quiet neighborhood.
Others claimed that screams characteristic of a domestic fight were heard shortly before the explosions.
“There were two shots, first we heard them insulting each other, and the girl started screaming,” said a woman interviewed by the local press.
