The Danish poet Yahya Hassan is dead. He died on Wednesday at the age of 24, his publisher Gyldendal said on Thursday. Hassan was a “boy with enormous talent,” wrote publishing director Simon Pasternak on Instagram. “That’s a catastrophe.”

Background to his death was initially unknown. However, the Danish radio broadcaster DR reported that Hassan was found dead in his apartment. There are no signs of a criminal act, the DR wrote, citing the police.

Hassan, born in Aarhus in 1995, made his debut in 2013 with the poetry collection “Yahya Hassan” at the age of only 18. The work has received numerous awards and, with more than 120,000 copies sold, is considered the best-selling lyrical collection by a debutant in Danish history. In 2019, Hassan released the follow-up work “Yahya Hassan 2”, which, however, was far less successful than the first collection.

In the poems, Hassan wrote about his childhood in the west of Aarhus, violence, Drugs, the immigrant milieu and also expressed harsh criticism of the Muslim community. As a result, he received death threats and was under personal protection for longer. In several videos Facebook he had reported in the past of being involved in a gang conflict.
